This is a quest to make all the slides featured in the Whittlin Jim's "Slide of the Month" in Boy's Life magazine. (Hopefully without doing lasting damage to my hands or fingers.) Blogging my progress along the way. I completed my task in March of 2017 and now post my own designs along with some other "Slide of the Month" contributors.

John Henry
Sometime between 2012 and 2015
Time to carve: 4 hours
Finishing: 2 hour
An odd slide for me to make. I chose not to include a face because I wasn't happy with the way it was coming out so here is the result. Carved from maple, this took quite awhile to carve as there was a lot of material to remove. The handle of the hammer is made from a piece of metal rod I had lying around. The slide is painted with craft paint and given a couple of coats of poly.
There is some thought that the folk tail of John Henry is based on a real man. You can find more information here Steel Driving Man
