April 2022
Time to make: 2 hours
Finishing: 1.5 hour
Original design: Philmont / Bill Macfarlane
Dan Beard is the northern most camp on the Philmont property and offers low impact camping as well as a series of challenges the crews must work through as a team. The trail to get to the challenges is a strenuous "The Calf Blaster" hike which in itself could be considered a challenge. But it is also known as the beginning of the "Ranger Challenge" which is a non-stop hike from the northern most point to the Southern most point of the ranch wearing (at least) a 40 pound backpack. I understand the record for this intense 35 mile footslog is 15 and a half hours.
Carved from pallet pine, it's another layered side which I smoothly sanded parts of and lightly sanded other areas. The reason behind this was to use the grain of the wood to give the mountain areas some definition. Painted with hobby paints, lettered with waterslide paper, and finished off with a couple coats of poly.
